Mon 12 Nov 2018
Moving home can be a stressful experience and also expensive. However, with a bit of thought and some careful planning, it can go smoothly and you'll be settled into your new home in no time. Here are our top 10 tips for making your move as stress-free and inexpensive as possible.
1. Label your boxes
When you pack, label your boxes with which room the items are for, this makes it much easier once you get to your new home.
2. Appliances & furniture
Moving into a new property will likely mean you need some new furniture or appliances. Consider keeping the cost down by buying second-hand furniture. Local charity RE:SOURCE specialise in preloved refurbished furniture, new graded appliances, and new beds & mattresses. Find out more information about their products on their website here.
3. Contents insurance
This might not be the first thing on your mind but is very important. Whilst your Landlord will insure the building, you will need contents insurance.
4. Don't leave packing until the last minute
Try and be organised, pack the non-essential items first.
5. Redirect your post
Make sure you contact the Post Office to get your mail redirected. If you don't, it could lead to you losing important documents or parcels. Visit the Royal Mail website for more information.
6. Change of address
This might be boring but it is essential to notify all relevant organisations of your new address, including banks, the DVLA for your driving licence, doctors surgery, dentist, schools & insurance companies. Reallymoving.com have a more detailed checklist here.
7. On the day - move the large items in first
By getting the big items into the property first you can then get them into place and unpack around them.
8. Check inventory
If renting through us, you will be given a detailed Inventory of the property. Make sure you check this important document as soon as you get to your new home and notify us of any discrepancies or comments you wish to make within the specified time frame.
9. Have a cuppa!
Make sure you have a kettle, tea, coffee, milk and cups handy so you can make a well-deserved refreshment
10. Let friends & Family know you have moved
Give your friends and family your new address so they know where to send your new home cards!
